Radio Free Cybertron’s fifth annual Toy Fair live stream follows Hasbro’s Toy Fair 2014 Transformers reveals as they break. Leader Class Jetfire, Voyager Roadbuster and Sky-Byte lead the Generations news, and every movie Dinobot gets a robot mode. Activision unveils Rise of the Dark Spark, and Hasbro splits Transformers into lines by age and complexity. The stream is dedicated to co-host JD Church, who died February 12, 2014.
Remembering JD Church
JD Church died on February 12, 2014, from complications of an infection. He co-hosted Radio Free Cybertron and Superhero Time and hosted Fanboy Versus. Brian credits JD with bringing Radio Free Cybertron back in 2009 and calls him one of his dearest friends.
Guests remember how warmly JD welcomed substitute hosts on Fanboy Versus and his Minecraft videos. JD left medical bills and funeral costs, and a memorial fund at tfradio.net/JD has a $10,000 goal. Weirdwolf’s TFYLP episode on tftalk.net is dedicated to JD, and a special Fanboy Versus episode in his memory is coming.
Hasbro Splits Transformers by Age and Complexity
Hasbro’s investor event the day before laid out the 2014 plan. Rescue Bots covers preschoolers, the main line covers ages 5 to 10, and Generations is for collectors. Hasbro counts 73 collector-focused items this year, up from 54. Phil calls the age-based split the biggest news of the day, and the crew agrees it serves every kind of fan.
Movie Generations and the Dinobots
Every Movie Dinobot Gets a Robot Mode
The Collectors Club confirms that all the Dinobots have robot modes in the movie. The two-headed flyer is named Strafe, and the crew likes names like Scorn and Slash. Photos of the movie Grimlock win the crew over, and several hosts say the Dinobots would fit right in with Beast Hunters. [Source: Transformers Collectors Club]
Movie Generations: Hound, Galvatron and a Classic Optimus Prime
About 20 movie figures will come under the Generations brand. Voyager Hound comes with seven weapons, and Galvatron turns out to be a truck. A flat-nose truck Optimus Prime in G1-style colors appears, which the crew calls very G1. [Source: not found]
Generations 30th Anniversary Reveals
Leader Class Jetfire, Voyager Roadbuster and Sky-Byte
Generations adds a Leader Class, starting with Jetfire. He has a snap-on helmet and chrome on his boosters and rifles, and the Leader Class continues into 2015. Voyager Roadbuster is the surprise of the day and looks great, though it needs a sticker sheet like Whirl. Voyager Sky-Byte turns into a shark, and the crew is thrilled he gets a toy. Nightbeat, Jhiaxus, Windblade, Tankor and Rattrap on Display
Nightbeat is a Goldfire remold, not the Jazz mold from earlier images. Jhiaxus is heavily retooled. Windblade, Tankor and Rattrap are on display, and Rattrap’s weapons come in unpainted clear plastic. Legends Gears has his own head, and Acid Storm reuses the Legends Starscream mold. Arcee and Chromia do not appear, and two Generations deluxes remain unrevealed. [Source: not found]
Masterpiece Grimlock Reissue and the Future of Masterpiece
Diecast photographs a Masterpiece Grimlock reissue in new packaging. Hasbro says Platinum Edition and Masterpiece will continue. The crew debates whether the original’s crown and other accessories will return.
Legends Cosmos, Tailgate and Shrapnel Not Cancelled
Phil reports from the Hasbro preview that Legends Cosmos, Tailgate and Shrapnel were under-ordered, not cancelled. Hasbro expects retailers to reorder and expects a US release. He also hears that Hasbro is acutely aware of fan demand for a G1 cartoon Arcee. Overlord is on Hasbro’s mind as it plans Generations for 2015 and 2016. [Source: ASM]
Kids’ Lines and Kre-O
One-Step Changers, Chomp and Stomp Grimlock and Hero Mashers
The kids’ line centers on one-step changers. A large Chomp and Stomp Grimlock is a playset for them, with sounds that change based on which figure plugs in. Hero Mashers let kids swap heads and limbs, which the crew finds charming. Construct-Bots continues with movie Dinobots. [Source: not found]
Kre-O Continues with Dinobots and a Grimstone Combiner
Kre-O continues with Dinobot micro-changers, a Lockdown ship set and a Galvatron factory battle set with the first large-scale Kreon. A Kre-O combiner based on the Power Core Combiners Grimstone also appears. The crew hears the line may become a Toys R Us exclusive. [Source: not found]
Activision Unveils Transformers: Rise of the Dark Spark
Activision reveals Rise of the Dark Spark, a game that mixes the movie universe with the War for Cybertron universe. IGN posts the announcement trailer during the stream. The crew notices High Moon Studios is not credited, and one guest heard that its Transformers team was shut down. [Source: IGN]
