Spy Changer Scourge Coming as a Toys R Us Exclusive
While Brian was away, new Robots in Disguise basics came out: the Spy Changers, including little versions of Ultra Magnus and Optimus Prime, plus a Spy Changer X-Brawn. Word is that Spy Changer Scourge is coming as a Toys R Us exclusive. Brian calls Scourge “probably the coolest toy ever” and wants one. [Source: not found]
Transformers Armada Previewed: Mini-Cons, a New Show and a New Comic
Brian says Armada looks really cool, but he wants to learn more before he gets into it. On the ATT Buzz, Hooper X and Recharge run through what is known: a new show and comic, Autobots and Decepticons, and the Mini-Con concept, which may work something like Powermasters. They look over the small Mini-Con pictures posted on alt.toys.transformers, picking out a gorilla bot, a fire bot and Cheetor. They credit the fan who found the pictures and posted them to the AllSpark. [Source: not found]
Dreamwave Transformers Preview Comic Posted at Wizard World
A six-page preview comic is up at wizardworld.com as a lead-in to Dreamwave’s new Transformers series. Hooper X and Recharge sum it up as two guys walking through the snow and bickering. Spoiler: at the end they find Soundwave frozen in the ice. They joke that Skyfire in the ice would have been better. They have heard there is a good reason it’s Soundwave, but they call that speculation and let listeners figure it out. [Source: not found]
BotCon 2002 Posts a 1984-Style Catalog and Opens Unicron Pre-Orders
BotCon 2002 is the last weekend in July in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The BotCon site has a new catalog page in the 1984 style with all the characters, and fans can pre-order the giant Unicron statue. Hooper X plans to try to be there, and Recharge might be too. One of them is in the military and doesn’t know where he’ll be. Anyone who sees Zach at BotCon has to tell him “Hi, Zach,” because it’s tradition now. [Source: not found]
Brian Returns
Brian thanks everyone who sent words of encouragement while he was away. He thanks Hooper X for hosting last week, with help from Zach and Recharge. That show wasn’t part of the RFC On Your Site affiliate program, so affiliate listeners should catch it at tfradio.net, and it ran a bit vulgar. He hasn’t bought a Transformer since the Robots in Disguise bullet train team. He expects RFCs to be thin while he gets his bearings, and calls this week’s show more Wiigii goodness from the Transformers IRC channel on DALnet.
DVD Review: Beast Wars Volume 1
Jose Negron, aka Rapido, reviews Rhino’s Beast Wars Volume 1 DVD, about $20. The single disc holds six episodes: Beast Wars Parts 1 and 2, The Web, Equal Measures, Chain of Command and Power Surge. The case has a Maximal cover and an episode list with air dates. The insert is a one-page scene index. The menu offers play all, stereo or 5.1 surround and scene selection, with no real bonuses. He would have paid for a second disc with more episodes. Rapido found Beast Wars around the Transmetals era and now enjoys these episodes more than a lot of G1. He loves the banter and the thought of Ian Corlett voicing Cheetor’s growls. Audio and video quality are strong enough to show the simple early backgrounds. He can’t say whether anything was edited, but the credits are missing a “Beast Wars” chant or two, and some transitions seem missing from Power Surge. He recommends it to Beast Wars fans and hopes more Beast Wars and Beast Machines DVDs follow.
Brian on the G1 Season Box Sets
Brian wants the Beast Wars DVDs and the G1 Season 1 box set. Early word put Season 1 near $100, and lately $50 or $60, and he hopes for the lower price. He calls Season 1 boring and Season 2 “pure, utter crap.” Season 3, he says, is pure solid gold, with better stories, acting and writing. He points casual fans to episodes like Fight or Flee, The Ultimate Weapon and Webworld, and says Season 3 is the box set he wants.
Point the Blame vs. the ATT Buzz
With no ATT Buzz from John DeLuna this week, Hooper X, Recharge and Zach broadcast “live and loud” from Hooper X’s bedroom. They look at an alt.toys.transformers.moderated thread where Raksha discusses the “Lady in Purple.” It’s a purple figure drawn above Thundercracker and Skywarp in a G1 animation image. Raksha describes the character as a female Seeker medic, which Hooper X calls his fan-character bingo card filled out. Zach and Recharge call it an animation error, though they say fans are free to write fanfic about it. They also mention a mean-spirited fanfic and an essay feud making the rounds on the Wiigii channel. One of them has a Cryotek, and Recharge says his Target in Douglasville, Georgia has about 20, a mile from his house. Recharge hopes to record bits for RFC once he gets a mic and gets settled.
