SDCC 2022: Transformers: EarthSpark Trailer and Toys
The first Transformers: EarthSpark trailer impresses the crew with its production quality and voice acting. Don hopes the human characters are competent and interesting, not like the humans of Robots in Disguise 2015. The toy reveals include Tacticons, a new price point that transforms on your finger. One host loves Twitch, the drone-like character, and notes she is a Nick Roach design. EarthSpark Megatron reportedly draws on Alex Milne’s IDW Megatron. One host points out EarthSpark Skywarp’s resemblance to Cybertron Thundercracker. Paladin in Discord says one EarthSpark vehicle looks like the Sea Duck from TaleSpin. Brian wishes Hasbro would focus on one show-based line instead of spreading out behind Generations. [Source: Radio Free Cybertron]
Alpha Trion and Vector Sigma Set
Hasbro shows an Alpha Trion and Vector Sigma set due November 1, likely a PulseCon-season exclusive. It reuses the Scourge mold with many new parts and includes an Orion Pax head. The crew loves the Vector Sigma head and both head sculpts. Chris notices Alpha Trion gets two open hands, which suits holding the circuit key. He is glad to finally get a Sunbow-style Orion Pax. Legacy Wave 3 Robot Modes Revealed
Hasbro showed only robot modes for Pointblank, Skullgrin, Crankcase and Dead End, holding full reveals for an August 16 Transformers Tuesday. Diecast is not sold on Pointblank’s proportions, while Don will buy him. Diecast loves Skullgrin’s head, while another host thinks it looks out of place on the inner robot. Crankcase reuses much of Skids. Pointblank’s fists are molded shut, so there is no Japanese-style Targetmaster option. One host thinks Hasbro arrived at SDCC without much new to show. He has also heard the new CEO has little interest in Power Rangers, though he cannot vouch for it. [Source: Radio Free Cybertron]
Leader Class Transmetal 2 Megatron
The crew is not feeling the first look at Leader Transmetal 2 Megatron. The face looks wrong, and the colors lack the chrome or metallic paint the character needs, as Ashaman notes in Discord. One host says it would make a good Cryotek and would rather wait for that. He adds that the show’s late-season Transmetal 2 Megatron model was plain to begin with. [Source: Radio Free Cybertron]
Shattered Glass Flamewar Preorders
Shattered Glass Flamewar is up for preorder at $41.99 with a Battle Master and a comic. Brian is confused that it costs only $7 less than the two-deluxe Slicer set, but he preordered anyway. Another host thinks the heavy deco explains the price. The crew is glad Ben Yee is getting a toy of a character he helped create. [Source: Radio Free Cybertron]
One host asks Chris whether the boxed HasLab Victory Saber samples mean the toy is already in production. Chris explains they are engineering pilots, late test shots in target plastics with packaging proofs. Production is probably starting now, with delivery planned for winter. The crew likes the reversible slipcover that evokes Victory-era packaging. Don considered a second set, but he is getting married. [Source: ToysWalker on Facebook]
Shattered Glass Ultra Magnus and Blaster In Hand
In-hand photos show Shattered Glass Ultra Magnus in a box far bigger than the toy. One host guesses Hasbro sized the box for a future leader like a Shattered Glass Grimlock. Brian likes Shattered Glass Blaster more than he expected, though he does not need the mold again. [Source: Transformers Never Die]
What We Got This Week
Chris got Red Cog, which is mostly black, and its weapon pack is less modular than promised. The Amazon Wreckers Impactor and Spindle set has a good Impactor retool, but Spindle’s joints are loose. Motormaster’s trailer is dense and heavy, and the Menasor frame is solid, though the trailer kickstand does not lock. His second Studio Series 86 Arcee also has a loose waist, so he suggests nail polish on the tab.
Brian got the Creatures Collide set, which does nothing for him, though he likes Ransack. The Target Bumblebee-colored Terrorsaur is gloriously beautiful. He also got Sandstorm from Walmart and the toy-color chicken Dinobot, and Studio Series Ironhide arrived unopened.
Diecast is impressed with Studio Series 86 Arcee, ankle rockers and all, though he prefers the Earthrise colors. He also got Diaclone Twin Twist, Goldbug from Creatures Collide, the Wreckers Impactor and Spindle set and the chicken Dinobot. He picked up Terrorsaur for its colors and the last of a third-party trainbot team.
Matt got Goldbug and Ransack from Don’s spare Creatures Collide set and likes them both.
Don bought three Creatures Collide sets to split with friends and got the Target Terrorsaur through Blade. Motormaster is still unopened. His big find is Unite Warriors Skyreign from a Greensboro comic shop for $115.
Rob‘s pickup this week was not Transformers.
