Another Transformers Fan First Friday has come and gone, this time focused around Studio Series 86, and the celebration of the 35th anniversary of Transformers The Movie. In keeping with this, the stream opened with the announcement of an upcoming 4K edition of Transformers The Movie. According to Matt Ferguson, the artist who created the cover art for both upcoming releases, this is the product of a brand new film scan and remastering, resulting in a sharper image with colors that “pop” more than the previous editions. The 4K release will be as both a limited edition Steel Book release which will go up for preorder from Shout Factory on May 24th, and a standard 4K + Blu-ray release that will be offered later this year.
Moving on to the toys, Leader class Slug with Exo-Suit Daniel Witwicky, Deluxe Gnaw, and Voyager Wreck-Gar were all officially debuted today. Though the presenters certainly weren’t shy about expressing their disappointment that the rug had been pulled out from under them by Slug and Wreck-Gar leaking in advance. Slug (or Slag, because honestly we’re all going to call it Slag anyway) is decoed based on the look of the cartoon, and during the stream was even specifically contrasted against the more toy-based Power of The Primes Slag to demonstrate the differences in approach.
Gnaw was a genuine first-look during the stream, and while naturally visually similar to the earlier Legends class Gnaw, is all-new design work that tries to go more strongly for resemblance to the movie appearance. Gnaw is shorter than average for a Deluxe, which we can determine from the in-package shot, but it’s likely a situation like the Allicon where it’s still at least as massive as a typical toy of its price point.
Wreck-Gar had leaked in the past several days, but the stream was out first look at most of the details. One highlight called out early was that the motorcycle mode is designed so that two of this mold can ride together, much like the 2010-Generations Wreck-Gar mold, and even many Deluxes scale well with the Voyager Wreck-Gar motorcycle for extended play value – including the POTP Wreck-Gar retooled from the Combiner Wars Groove Deluxe mold.
One thing that may stand out about Wreck-Gar and Gnaw both is that the colors may not be exactly what we would expect for the characters. During the deco design phase, the blu-ray release of Transformers The Movie was referenced for colors, on the theory it was the latest and most accurate mastering of the movie. But those of us used to older editions with different color treatment and additional media informed by those colors may look at these as being a bit off. Unfortunately, it was probably not practical for the deco artists to obtain original animation cels to use as definitive color references.
Finally, our expectation of a new Shattered Glass subline reveal proved correct, though we were off in our guess of which character. Mostly. Today’s reveal was for Shattered Glass Starscream, a redeco of Siege Starscream. SG Starscream’s “gimmick” is having the deco associated with Jetfire, and that’s well reproduced here. Starscream didn’t get as extensive of new add-on parts as Megatron, but does get a new pair of swords which can tab together to form a single broadsword. Anyway, I say we were “mostly” wrong about the character reveal, because it seems like the choice for the reveal may have been switched late along the process. Hasbro Pulse’s promotional slide for the Shattered Glass subline today featured text naming Goldbug as the latest reveal, though Starscream was the one pictured. The reveal order may have been shuffled (possibly due to production sample availability or other reasons) and the copy editor for the website didn’t get the memo in time. It’s not a big deal though; at the rate the reveals have been coming, it’ll only be a few weeks at most until the next one.
We had expected going in that we’d see Studio Series Jolt, Sideswipe, and Grindor from the live action movie series, but that was not to be, with this event being all about the original Transformers movie. We were also uncertain about whether Artfire would have been part of this at all, and that too went unacknowledged. While there’s no hint at another Fan First Friday, things like Transformers Tuesday can appear at any time …well, any time that happens to be a Tuesday, anyway. So more of this stuff is likely to be trickled out bit by bit over social media in the coming weeks.
All of the revealed toys went up for preorder shortly after the stream. Shattered Glass Starscream is exclusive to Hasbro Pulse, but the Studio Series toys are up on Amazon as well as fan channel retail sites. You can find their product pages on Amazon through the following affiliated links:
