I’ll concede to not a small amount of bias here as I express the opinion that the just-revealed third assortment of Super 7’s Transformers Ultimates lineup is absolutely fantastic looking. And it stems almost entirely from just two of the figures. Super 7 posted preorders this afternoon for the wave which will be upcoming somewhere in the distant, nebulous future (not to be confused with the Nebulos Future of the year 2007), and it includes Wreck-Gar, and Tarn from IDW comics (with an accessory minifigure of Nickel) with a bit of restyling to conform better with other G1 cartoon characters. While those two are excellent choices in their own right, it’s the remaining two that make this wave something special.
That includes G2 Megatron, with plenty of accessories allowing the figure to be outfitted in both toy accurate, comic book accurate, and hypothetical Sunbow forms. This is carried out by the inclusion of three swappable heads, toy-based weapons, comic-inspired Crazy Guns, and a purple Fusion Cannon so you can make your perfect G2 Megatron. It looks amazing and I’d say they nailed every important detail. It is a love letter to G2. But the only thing that might be better than a love letter to G2 is a love letter to City of Steel, with the Ultimates Alligaticon. Optimus Prime’s body reconstructed as a sewer-dwelling alligator is an amazing figure to see just for a start, but the accessories, oh my the accessories. Alligaticon comes with a battle taxi drone which is probably not to scale sadly, as well as the disembodied head of Optimus Prime. Plus, it has the spire of Megatron’s New York Headquarters with Optimus Prime’s blaster-toting arm attached to it. Of course as ever, at $55 each this joyous celebration of the absurdity of G1 and all the rest doesn’t come cheap. But they sure are trying to make it hard to say no to these things.
